In February 2020, a demonstration tilapia farm was officially opened in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Present at the opening were the excellency Dutch ambassador Jeroen Verheul as well as Tanzanian Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Abdallah Hamis.
In the cooperative framework of FoodTechAfrica, DAE members Til-Aqua International, Holland Aqua and Viqon contributed their expertise to the design, construction and development of BigFish farm, as wel as training of staff.
The demonstration fish farm is a good example of an integrated approach to fish farming. It is a RAS (Recirculation Aquaculture System) tilapia farm including a hatchery producing high-quality YY-fingerlings based on improved genetics. The location also offers facilities for aquaculture training, making it an attractive place for the Tanzanian aquaculture sector as a whole.
